HOW TO MEASURE LIKE A PRO!

Although we recommend using our free measuring service there may be times when you prefer to do your own.  If you bring your measurements to the store you can get an instant estimate for any of our products fully installed and a fitting date can be arranged within days.

The following tips will help you get it right.

  1. Draw a rough plan with the shape of the room or area. If you don’t have a steel retractable measure it is worth buying or borrowing one.
  2. ROOMS – Measure the widest point and the longest length of the room.
  3. Measure any detail like alcoves and recesses.
  4. Indicate on your plan where the doors and windows are.
  5. Allow an extra 10cm (4”) into doorways
  6. Count the number of doors that will require door bars and measure their width.
  7. Note the condition of existing underlay and if the underlying floor is concrete, tiles or floorboards. Check if there are existing gripper rods round the perimeter of the area.
  8. Is there under-floor heating in the room?
  9. STAIRS – Measure the height (rise) and depth of the steps as well as the width of the staircase then count the number of steps. Pay particular attention to the bottom step, it is often wider than the rest. Remember that the landing carpet will fold down over the first rise at the top of the stairs to give a clean line. Stairs that change direction need to be measured individually.  If you have wrap around/open plan stairs, measure the complete wrap as well as the width.

Legislation dictates that carpet is sold in square metres.  Most tape measures have both metric and imperial measurements on them.  If you want to measure in feet and inches – your sales assistant will convert it for you.

Please note that most carpets come in 4 or 5metre widths and we will supply carpet to the nearest 10cm (4”) length.  This is because many rooms are not exactly square.  Once the carpet has been cut to size it can’t be added to and the fitter can easily trim a little excess to get a perfect fit.  This is a practical measure derived from years of experience which saves both money and time.
