Will carpets make my asthma worse?
No. A study by the Carpet Foundation found that carpets actually keep the dust down, so are better for asthma than hard flooring, where dust is disturbed with every draught. Regular vacuuming releases trapped particles and helps keep environment dust free.
I get confused by all the carpet terms, what do they mean?
A cut pile carpet is where the loops are sheared to create individual upright fibres. They can range from close sheared velvet to shag piles and semi-shag. As with many carpets, the amount of yarn used will determine the quality of the carpet.
In loop pile carpets, the loops remain intact, giving a corded appearance, good for high traffic areas, as it resists crushing and remains smart.
Cut and loop pile carpets are a mixture of the two, creating sculpted patterns and textures. These are not currently so popular, and were most commonly used in lounges and bedrooms.
Twists are where the filaments of yarn are twisted together, this can be heat set to retain the appearance. Twists are popular because they are hard wearing and give a nice texture, combining classic with contemporary.
How do you measure correctly?
We offer a measuring service and strongly recommend you use it. However, if you want to take your own measurements, sketch out the rooms and use a steel retractable measure to measure the longest length and widest point, then add 75mm – 100mm (3 – 4 inches) to each measurement, to allow for tucking under the skirting boards, doorways and walls which aren’t quite square – as is the case in many cottages. Don’t forget alcoves and bay windows.
For stairs, measure the height of each vertical riser and the depth of each horizontal tread. Add these figures together and multiply by the total number of steps. Allow anther 450mm (1ft 6 inches) for fitting. The landing carpet will usually roll over the rise of the top step. Take note that the bottom stair is often wider than the rest.
